The project had been set up to combat the growing concerns from health professionals that adult men aged 18-35 years have a lifestyle that could be detrimental to their health in later life.  Subsequent successes have seen the project develop across Southampton with a specific focus on working with vulnerable adults, in particluar working in partnership with the largest homeless charity in Southampton - Society of St James and Tatchbury Mount Hospital in Totton.

The project focuses on the four key targets for Southampton NHS regarding men’s health which area:-

• Chlamydia Screening
• Increase physical activity
• Stop Smoking
• Improve health and well being

There is a structured weekly timetable delivered around the city for men aged 18+ to get involved.  For further information on the expansive work delivered in partnership with Comic Relief and the Football Foundation, contact Phil Hastings t: 0845 6889370.

Health Kicks - Saints 4 Sport

The Health Kicks model has expanded to develop a specific project for Clients of the Society of St James who are at risk of homelessness and substance misuse.  Delivering a weekly timetable of sporting activities ranging from football and fishing to fitness training and golf, the success of Saints 4 Sport has seen over 260 participants takepart in the project within the first 12 months based on a three tier approach of; 1) Engagement, 2) Accredited qualfications, and 3) external  training and development opportunities.

126 accredited qualfication have been achievved by participants in all four disciplines with an annual Awards event taking place each year to celebrate each paerticipants achievements.

Tom (a current participant) aged 42, has enjoyed the expereince; "It's been an amazing time; I've really enjoyed it and have learnt so much.  My confidence has returned and I have learnt to trust again.  Things are looking up and I'm hoping this leads to a College course."

The model has also been well received by health professionals.  Dr Hardman expressed her delight at the positive outcomes, "The feedback from some of our most chaotic clients has been fantastic. The fishing course for example will reduce our clients intake (methadone) for the 6 hours they are attending each week. Our clients are sleeping better, they feel fitter and stronger and have a feeling of being part of a community, something that is very important to all human beings."

It is a physical development programme that uses a variety of fun games to engage children in physical activity.
