Over 120 children from the inner city area of Southampton took part in a football tournament on Saturday 14th June 2009. Organised by Saints in the Community in association with Hyde Housing, the tournament celebrated the diverse range of countries taking part in the FIFA World Cup, and brought together a wide representation of communities from within Southampton.
Staged at Goals Soccer Centre, teams competed in the hot weather conditions with the eventual winners representing Argentina respectively. Pictured here at the St Mary’s Stadium is the winning team who had their trophy represented to them by the former Saints Player Rueben Agboola at the Saints match vs. MK Dons.
Jazz Bhatti (Saints Football & Inclusion Officer) commented, “It’s great to see so many young people enjoying football and we’re grateful for the support from the local schools that helped to make this event a great success. Hyde Housing will be supporting the tournament for the next 3 years and we look forward to expanding the number of teams in time for the next World Cup in 2010!”
